Draft Week Outfield Hits PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Fantasy Baseball Blog
Written by Sean
We have some quick hits today just to make sure everyone is aware of some recent outfield news.
Brett Gardner has been named the starting centerfielder by Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
Gardner could be a cheap source of 25-30 SB's.   He is not a power hitter despite having three home runs this spring.   Last  year at Triple-A, he stole 37 bases and a .414 OPS.   If he falters at all Melky Cabrera and Nick Swisher could very easy move in to replace him.

Skip Schumaker has successfully transitioned from an outfielder to second baseman.  Don’t expect much fantasy-wise.  Playing full time, he will help with around a .300 batting average and may get 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases.

Jordan Schafer has won the starting centerfielder job for the Atlanta Braves.  Schafer has 20/20 potential and should be drafted in all NL only leagues and is a good late pick in mixed leagues

Josh Anderson, who lost the Atlanta  spring battle to Schafer was traded to the Detroit Tigers. He will be the speed off the bench and the fourth outfield that the Tigers had been looking for.  Depending on the amount of playing time he receives he could be a nice source of stolen bases.  This in turn will also cause Marcus Thames to lose some playing time.

Andre Ethier has been named the Right Fielder for the Dodgers.  This was expected and makes Juan Pierre the fourth outfielder.

Ryan Braun
supposedly re-injured his intracostal muscle last weekend.  MRI revealed nothing. Don’t change any expectations.

BJ Upton is expected to start the season on the DL. Matt Joyce will start in centerfield in his absence for the Rays. Upton should only miss a few weeks at the most.

Jerry Owens of the White Sox was waived on Monday.  DeWayne Wise and Brian Anderson will split center field duties.  Both have the ability to get hit double digits in both home runs and stolen bases.  Both should be taken late in AL only drafts only.

Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates will start the season in the minors. He played very well this spring  and if he continues playing well in AAA, expect an early to midseason call-up. Steven Pearce also was sent down to to the minors, making Nyjer Morgan and Brandon Moss the starting left and right fielders with Eric Hinske winning the job as the fourth outfielder in Pittsburgh.

Jason Lane was sent down to AAA for the Toronto Blue Jays despite a having 5 homers and batting .358 this spring.

For anyone still drafting this week,  Best of luck!  Also be sure to check out some of these expert draft results.  They can be very useful. Not only for last minute draft prep,  but also for discovering players you might have missed while drafting and names to keep your eyes on for your waiver wires.

You guys are right on - Glad someone is paying attention!

Note - I actually wrote this and sent it to the editor after the anderson trade and before I heard about the Sheffield release.

Perfect example of why we need to keep up with all the news!

I agree with ichirosan on this one Sean. With Sheffield released, I think that would increase Thames playing time and give him significantly more value. Just look at the power he produced last season in limited AB. While the average won't be great, he has the potential to be a 30 HR guy.
