Rumor Central
Written by Kevin Orris
I’m proud to announce that by this time next week, rosters will be set and regular season baseball will be underway.  This week we’ve got all kinds of big names showing up in the news, so here’s the latest:
  • Things are looking grim for expected Oakland Athletics’ closer Joey Devine who recently paid a visit to Dr. James Andrews this week.  Anytime that you see Dr. Andrews' name there is rarely good news, so hold off on Devine for now.  His velocity has been down in the spring and he’s currently suffering from the same elbow issue that kept him out of action for two months last year.
  • The Detroit Tigers have cut veteran Gary Sheffield, who is currently sitting at 499 career home runs.  Sheffield, 40, is currently drawing a little interest from the Phillies, but no offers have been made as of the moment I’m writing this article.  In related news, the Tigers have confirmed that pitchers Rick Porcello and Ryan Perry will be on the Opening Day roster.
  • Adam Wainwright has been named the St. Louis Cardinals' Opening Day starter for 2009 against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, April 6.
  • Switch hitting third basemen Chipper Jones was given a contract extension this week that will likely keep him in a Braves uniform for the entirety of his career.  The deal is reportedly going to last through 2012.
  • Milwaukee Brewers' outfielder Ryan Braun was forced to leave Tuesday's game against the San Diego Padres in the second inning due to a thumb injury.  He is currently listed as day-to-day.
  • The Padres and Cleveland Indians were able to reach a deal this week which will send reliever Ed Mujica to San Diego in exchange for cash or a player to be named.
  • Jason Isringhausen of the Tampa Bay Rays will reportedly pitch out of the bullpen in 2009, but will begin the season on the Disabled List.
  • The Pirates have named Jeff Karstens as their 5th starter.
  • Derek Jeter will hit leadoff for the New York Yankees this year, which will force Johnny Damon into the two hole.
  • The San Francisco Giants have decided to send Kevin Frandsen to Triple-A Fresno and have named Emmanuel Burris their starting second basemen.  Pablo Sandoval will start at third base.
  • Dallas McPherson was released by the Florida Marlins this week, which means that Emilio Bonifacio will be the starting third basemen and Jorge Cantu will start at first.  Gaby Sanchez will be sent down to the minor leagues.  Ross Gload was recently dealt to the Marlins for a player to be named.
There you have it, the latest and biggest news in baseball in the past week.  I encourage you to comment below on what other moves pop up before Opening Day.

There are people that are talking about how he would be a good fit with the Reds, but does anyone really believe that he can play the field adequately?

I hear the Reds are looking to fill a bat boy position. Maybe they'll give Shef a call?
